SACRAMENTO—
The killing of a pregnant cow at the state fair has one group yelling to pull the livestock moms to be off the property permanently. The cow that was killed was running fast through a busy Midway before the fair opened, it even knocked an officer down. But protestors say, that's not excuse and they want these pregnant animals off fair grounds.
Protestors were outside Cal Expo Wednesday outraged over the cow killing incident. When it went down people on the ground say the cow was on a rampage for more than an hour before they made the call to kill it. Still protestors say, that's bull. Cerena Sanchez said, "I would think that the cow was scared because she was ready to give birth."
UC Davis runs the livestock nursery at the fair. It's an attraction to show life in action. There not happy the cow was shot, but now want to focus on making sure this doesn't happen again.
Dr. David Wilson with UC Davis wants to build protocols and install new procedures to better handle future escapes, like giving it more time before making fatal decisions. And that's not all, Wilson said, "We want to have a second perimeter fence around them, in the unlikely event a cow did escape there be a second fence to contain them."
Still while spectators may enjoy the nursing area, protestors say these pregnant animals shouldn't be on fair grounds.
