Despite resucers effots it still doesn't want to be caught.

"We're disappointed we didn't get the animal."

For weeks now rescuers from The Marine Mammal Center have tried to save this adult male sea lion that was shot in the head in Old Sacramento.

Since then they've made a half dozen attempts at different spots along the Sacramento River but so far no luck.

"We came close. This is the first time we were able to get a net around it. Unfortunately the two nets got intertwined."

Shelbi Stoudt from The Marine Mammal Center says they learned a few things from Today's try.

She says, "We learned his responsiveness and we did notice that he's losing weight and he's not eating. He doesn't have the energy that an animal of the size should."

Rescuers used nets and boards to try and trap the 400 pound mammal.

After watching them fight with the sea lion, Shelly Brimm says she hopes their efforts will eventually pay off.

"I hope they capture it and I hope it lives."

Next time someone spots it, rescuers say they'll go and try again.

Fish and Game arrested 43-year old, Larry Legans of North Highlands for allegedly shooting the animal.
