Sacramento Police officers on bikes demonstrated Wednesday evening just how effective they can be. The bike unit is being cut from the department at the end of this month. Wednesday evening a “code 3” cover call was dispatched when an off-duty sheriff’s deputy encountered trouble inside a downtown parking garage. At least three officers on bikes raced to his rescue and those officers ended up capturing two of the three suspects running from the scene.
It can be hard to maneuver through parking garages and the alleys of Old Sacramento in big squad cars. The officers were called when the off-duty deputy encountered a young man with a fire extinguisher and two of the young man’s buddies nearby. Were they lying in wait or did the deputy just happen to bust them in the middle of mischief? That’s where the confusion came in and the call for emergency back-up.
The three were busted for petty theft (the fire extinguisher) and tampering with fire equipment. They were cited and released. While the police officers on scene said the call wasn’t as big of an emergency as it seemed, it demonstrated a police response and presence that will diminish in the next few weeks due to a $12.2 million dollar budget cut.
