ATLANTA - Two employees of a local television station in Atlanta are lucky to be alive after their live truck exploded following an incident involving the truck's raised mast and power lines.

A journalist and a photographer with Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB-TV forgot to lower their news van's broadcast mast after broadcasting from the Fulton County Jail Wednesday afternoon. Shortly after exiting the jail, the news van's mast struck a group of power lines located outside the facility, causing a power surge.

Equipment caught fire within the fan and a moderate explosion caused the asphalt underneat the van to separate, leaving behind a sizable concrete crater. Electricity traveled through the van and into an underground water main, causing water to be out to nearby residents and businesses for a short time.

Reporter Tom Jones and photojournalist Leonard Raglin were hospitalized with minor burns and smoke inhalation.

Many news vans have stickers warning van operators to watch for power lines when raising and lowering a broadcast mast.
