The New Cost Of A UC Education
SACRAMENTO - Students from across the University of California system are outraged over future fee increases approved one week ago by members of the university system's board of regents. But just how much will students now have to dish out to pay for their education?

According to a document released on November 19th by the UC Board of Regents Committee on Finance, graduate professional students with majors in business, law, theatre and most medicinal fields currently pay $6,822 in student fees. This fee will increase to $7,401 during the current academic calendar in time for the Spring Quarter in January 2010.

Fees will inflate onece again for graduate student professionals to $9,312 -- an increase of $1,911 per semester -- to fulfill the full 32% fee increase over nearly two school years.

Fees will also increase for both resident and non-resident undergraduate students, as well as graduate student professionals with degrees in various other fields.

Since the Committee on Finance approved the 32% fee increase, students from many University of California campuses have protested on campus. Students at UC Los Angeles, UC Berkeley and UC Davis demonstrated by locking themselves in various buildings throughout their respective campuses, leading to police raids and several arrests.

A protest at Mrak Hall on the campus of UC Davis led to the arrests of 51 students and an unidentified professor. A second protest at Mrak Hall led to the successful attempt to seek advocacy on behalf of the students for those arrested.

Students have vowed to continue demonstrating on their campuses following the Thanksgiving holiday break, during which most administrative buildings are locked and closed to the public.
