SACRAMENTO -
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is asking the City Council to consider a new plan to change the city government.
A judge recently rejected the mayor's move to let citizens vote on a strong mayor system. So on Tuesday, he proposed something a little less powerful. Under the new plan, the mayor could hire and fire city managers and department heads, veto council actions, and allow an independent budget analyst to review spending. The revised plan also calls for term limits for the mayor and council mayors, and a provision that would give voters the power to confirm or reverse the strong mayor system in the future if it passes.
Putting the plan on a June ballot for voters requires city council approval. The council has until February 23rd to decide whether to do that.
