Woman Wants To Donate Skin To Burn Victims
A lot of folks have been asking how they can help the children burned in a daycare center in Hermosillo, Mexico. Some want to donate toys, others money. But an Orangevale woman said she is willing to donate the skin off her back, and then some.

Like millions across the country, Tammie Markley's heart went out to the children burned in a daycare center in Hermosillo, Mexico. "I wouldn't know what to do if something like that were to happen to one of my children".

And that is when she came up with the idea. Two years ago Tammie underwent Gastric Bypass surgery and has since lost more than 170 pounds, leaving her with a lot of excess skin. "under my arms you have it on your stomach area and your thigh area", Markley said.

She called Shriners Hospital to inquire about donating skin to the young burn survivors brought there from Mexico. "it just doesn't seem fair to take it and throw it away when there is people out there that can use it", Markley explained.

One of Shriners Hospital skin donors, Community Tissue Services, donated five square feet of skin to the children already. They typically use skin from deceased donors but lately have been seeing more live donors asking to help. Michael Blair, Director of Marketing at Community Tissue Services said, "it's become more common as the surgery becomes more common".

Shriners Hospital officials referred Tammie Markley to www.mtf.org, a website designed especially for patients with significant weight loss looking to remove and donate that extra skin. Markley may not be able to donate her skin to the children from Mexico at Shriners, but she knows that there is someone out there who will need it. "there's a lot of skin there and it can be given to quite a few people".
