The parents of a Sacramento State student killed in his dorm by a room-mate say they're devastated by an insulting bill sent by the school for almost $30,000 in medical aide.

Gerald and Elizabeth Hawkins, parents of Sacramento State student Scott Hawkins, told The Sacramento Bee they received a bill for $29,186.50 by the UC Davis Medical Center along with a letter stating their "patient" could no longer be seen by the hospital and referred them to a county clinic for additional treatment.

"It was just devastating and insulting," Gerald Hawkins told The Bee on Monday, adding that the letter prompted him and his wife to spend several hours on the phone with a grief counselor after receiving the letter.

A UC Davis Medical Center spokesperson told The Bee the mailing was "a mistake," saying Scott Hawkins was pronounced dead five minutes upon arrival to their hospital.

Alexander Gonzales, President of Sacramento State University, told Gerald and Elizabeth Hawkins their son died in the dormitory, which appears to contradict what UC Davis Med Center told The Bee Monday.

Quran Jones, the room-mate accused of killing Scott Hawkins, is listed in fair condition after being repeatedly shot by police during the confrontation at the American River Courtyard dormitories last month.
