SACRAMENTO -
The day after thanksgiving is not all gravy. You may want to think twice before throwing your leftovers down the drain. Here's one tip, the garbage disposal is not like the turkey it doesn't like to be stuffed. But because of our clean-up habits the plumbing business jumps 50% Thanksgiving Friday.
Turkey skins, potato peels, and grease all go down the drain and these thanksgiving classics can cause big backup disasters, keeping plumbing companies busy. FOX40 news followed, ACE plummer Gerry Marquez, on his 8th call of the day. He says this is one of the busiest days of the year, thanks to turkey grease. Marquez tells us When it (grease) hits the cold water, it kind of freezes up the grease.
On call number 9, things we're even worse. At the Silk family house the toilet started backing up and they know Thanksgiving is to blame. Melvyn Silk tells us "I think it was a result of the kitchen sink and the main line backed up, we had a pretty big turkey dinner yesterday." Plumber Marquez explained that it was "A buildup actually, it's mostly grease, soap scum actually, hair." The Silk family says the clog has been a lesson learned and are thankful for the plummer, a holiday hero. Silk says "It's never happened before, but i am going to be more cautious from now on and so we're going to use the sink a little less and the garbage a little more."
Just a few other things to avoid putting down the drain is celery, which gets stringy and can form a ball plugging the drain. Also, rice and water get together and form a gel. And as you now know turkey grease creates the perfect clog with a wax like material.
