No Friend To Felines: Casey Randy, 23, accused of dumping a cat into a Merced-area canal

MERCED - A 23-year-old Hilmar resident has been charged with cruelty toward an animal after admitting to throwing a neighborhood cat into a Merced canal.

Merced County authorities say Randy Casey was spotted by onlookers who reported the cat-throwing incident to the authorities. Deputies caught up with Casey at the 20000 block of Dayton Road, where he allegedly joked about throwing the cat into the river, saying he didn't care if the cat drowned.

Casey later admitted his handling of the animal was improper . He is currently booked into Merced County jail on $5,000 bail.

Deputies found the cat shivering from cold in brush near the canal. The cat is currently under the watch of animal control officials who are treating the feline for injuries sustained in the fall.
