PLACERVILLE - A shocking and disturbing case of animal cruelty in El Dorado County. Two kittens were brutally tortured and killed, then left in a cardboard box on the doorstep of the El Dorado County Animal Shelter in Placerville. Many are shocked to hear about such a horrific crime.

"For someone to do that, it's just terrible," said Ryan Wilson.

"They're so cute. It's sad when people torment animals," said Melissa McBride, who fosters shelter animals.

Animal control officers say it's one of the worst cases they've encountered.

"Even after 33 years in this business, it's one of the more horrific sites that I've seen," said Lt. Warren Candler, supervising animal services officer.

The Humane Society is offering a $2,500 reward for tips that help catch and convict those responsible.

"We believe that somebody had to have seen something. They either saw the incident, heard the noise or they know somebody that's missing a gray kitten and an orange kitten," said Lt. Candler.

"I think it's really pathetic that someone would go to that level. It makes me wonder what's going on in their head to have to do that to an animal that's defenseless," said Kimmy Geddes.
