The National Basketball Association is backing a proposed development strategy that would allow for a new Sacramento Kings arena to be built downtown, while the plot where Arco Arena currently stands would house a new state fairgrounds.

The proposed idea was one of seven pitched by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson. Funding for the plan would come from the sell of Cal Expo to a development group for the creation of a mixed-use community, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The plot of land used by Arco Arena, currently owned by the City of Sacramento, would be transferred to the State of California. A new Kings arena would be erected at the downtown rail yard currently owned by the city.

The Sacramento Bee reports the Maloof Family and officials with the NBA are supportive of this plan. State officials told Bee reporters they're willing to sell Cal Expo property provided they are given the fairgrounds at Arco Arena in exchange.
