SACRAMENTO COUNTY -
Police are searching for a suspicious person responsible for vandalism at the Beth Shalom temple in Carmichael.
Several swastika symbols were painted on the walls of the Beth Shalom Temple sometime early Tuesday morning. Authorities with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department also report a few shrubs located near the temple had been set on fire.
Scanner traffic from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department reports officers are looking for a man with a shaved head and a Swastika tattoo, possibly in his 40s, near the Beth Shalom temple off West El Camino Avenue in Carmichael.
Authorities with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department tell FOX40 News the person of interest may be responsible for vandalism. It has not yet been confirmed whether the vandalism would be considered part of a hate crime. They also could not confirm that the suspect's description as heard through police scanner traffic was accurate, but intend on holding a press conference Tuesday afternoon where additional information is expected to be released.
The FBI and several other agencies are assisting the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department with their investigation.
Tuesday's vandalism coincides with the anniversary of Kristallnacht, an event in which more than 20,000 people of the Jewish faith were arrested in placed into concentration camps throughout Europe. The event also saw the destruction of more than 200 synagogues throughout Nazi-controlled territories. According to a congregation leader with Beth Shalom Temple, the phrase "Kristallnacht Still Lives" was one of many spray painted on the wall of the temple.
