Jeffrey Salery, 50, accused of assaulting an inmate over a Michael Jackson insult
MERCED -
A scuffle over a Michael Jackson insult left one inmate at a Merced County detention facility injured and another inmate facing assault charges.
Merced County authorities say 50-year-old Jeffrey Salery, incarcerated originally for narcotic-related offenses, has now been charged with "battery with great bodily injury" after allegedly assaulting a 21-year-old inmate at the John Latorraca Correctional Facility Wednesday evening.
The injured inmate suffered a broken jaw and was treated at a Modesto-area hospital.
When questioned about the incident, correctional officers say Salery admitted to assaulting the unnamed inmate, adding that the victim "disrespected Michael Jackson."
It's unclear what exactly the insult was that led to the jailhouse brawl.
Michael Jackson passed away last Thursday at the age of 50 after suffering a cardiac arrest.
