SACRAMENTO - More than forty-thousand pirated DVDs were seized Tuesday in Sacramento and Yolo Counties. Detectives raided four stores in Sacramento, West Sacramento and Rancho Cordova. All of the stores are owned by the same man, who has been in business for ten years.

Detectives confiscated the Russian language DVDs and loaded them into large moving vans. The movies were being sold for fifteen dollars each. Authorities became aware of the illegal operation after a customer complained about the quality of a DVD and later called police.

Investigators say if a movie is still in theaters and it's available on DVD, then it's more than likely pirated. They're also warning consumers to pay attention to the packaging of the DVD.

"On the DVD itself there should be copyright and logo marks from the production company or the film company itself," said Sgt. Tim Curran with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

Those in the Russian community say they're shocked something illegal was going on.

"I think the people just never really paid attention to it. They were happy that there was a place where they could purchase something in the Russian language and preserve their culture," said Vlad Kirgiz, with the Sacramento Russian Cultural Center.
