MANTECA -
A Manteca man is behind bars for allegedly stabbing his wife to death.
Police arrested Jesse Tellez, 48, for the early morning killing Thursday.
His wife, Tevanie Tellez, 35, suffered multiple stab wounds.
The attack followed a loud fight heard by neighbors. The couple's children were present, and their 12-year-old daughter dialed 911.
Family said Tevanie endured years of abuse. They had encouraged her to leave her husband, and feared that this would eventually be the outcome.
"She didn't listen. She just didn't listen until it was too late," Tevanie's grandmother, Francis Maehl, said sobbing.
"She'd give you food out of her refrigerator if you needed it," Tevanie's cousin, Cheryl Roberts, added. "She'd give you the last dollar in her pocket. We were really close. She was a good mom. A loving person."
Family members hope others in her situation will get out before it's too late.
They said ultimately, the victim is the only one who can make that decision to end a volatile situation.
