SACRAMENTO -
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department will need to lay off almost 80 more deputies than it had anticipated because of an apparent miscalculation.
Sheriff John McGinness said unless something changes, he will need to lay off 209 deputies, plus another 22 non-sworn employees.
That is up from the 130 to 140 deputies he had said he would need to lay off after the Board of Supervisors approved a general fund budget.
McGinness said he and other department leaders had estimated savings from layoffs using mid-range salary figures.
But because of seniority rules and recently reduced salaries, the actual savings are lower than first estimated.
That means more deputy layoffs are needed to erase the deficit.
