SACRAMENTO -
A weekend of researching exercise equipment on the popular trade website Craigslist turned into a police investigation after FOX40's webmaster stumbled across an ad allegedly selling narcotics.
After stumbling across the Craigslist ad for drugs, we exchanged a few e-mails back and forth and later discovered the suspect's MySpace profile. He calls himself "Carlos Oxycodone and Hydrocodone," lists his phone number and asks him to "hit him up."
"Based on the information we got from FOX40, we conducted some follow-up and arranged for a meeting to buy some Oxycontin," Sacramento Police Sgt. Norm Leong said. "We were able to purchase 12 Oxycontin tablets for $80."
Despite his MySpace profile showing his age as 18, FOX40 decided not to identify the suspect after police told us he was in fact a 13-year-old.
"Can you tell us what happened?" FOX40 asked. "Where'd you get that stuff?" The only response we received was a headshake.
"Certainly a 13-year-old, you wouldn't think, would have access to this kind of stuff," Sgt. Leong said. "So we are curious to find out where he obtained the drugs and other property he's trying to sell."
Police said the teen also had Hydrocodone and marijuana in his possession. FOX40 also found Craigslist ads allegedly posted by the teen selling jewelry and a cell phone. Buyers wasted no time in contacting the boy, and police wasted no time in catching them.
Cops caught up with a woman who said she intended to buy Oxycontin for her grandmother, whose prescription ran out. Officers let the woman go.
Detectives also made contact with California Department of Corrections chaplain Ismail al-Jihad, who works with at-risk youth. He answered an ad hoping to buy jewelry from the boy. Police later told him the gold he purchased may be stolen.
"I buy things off of Craigslist all the time," al-Jihad said. "This is the first time that I've ever had any problem like this."
Police say the items found on the juvenile did not belong to his parents and are now investigating whether the items were stolen during burglaries.
