REDDING -
It was a comment from the crowd that may have gone unnoticed. A Redding man, identified as Bert Stead of Redding told a town hall meeting in Redding last week, "I"m a proud right wing terrorist."
Congressman Wally Herger, who represents the district, didn't interrupt or condemn the comment. In response, Herger said, "Amen. God bless you. There's a great American."
Now democrats are calling for an apology from Herger.
"People die as a result of terrorism. He needs to own up and take responsibility for that. In fact, he should condemn it," said Bill Falzett, chairman of the Yuba County Central Democratic Committee.
Istead, the Congressman is defending it. In response to the controversy, Herger's spokesman said. the constituent "Mr. Bert Stead is a taxpayer and veteran, who like so many others is rightfully fed up with being called "un-American, " or "extremist," or "political terrorist" by liberals in Washington, for simply exercising his First Amendment rights."
Congressman Herger is also taking some flack from national news outlets. Keith Olbermann even named him his nightly "Worst Person in the World".
FOX40 showed the video to some of Herger's constituents in Marysville. Many were stunned, including Ashby Johnson who proudly serves in the military. But he also made this point, "It's nothing to joke about, but I, and other fellow military members, do fight for the right to say what we want in America."
