SACRAMENTO -
The United States Coast Guard has re-activated an emergency fund for the families of those lost during Coast Guard disasters, such as the incident involving a C-130 Coast Guard plane based out of Sacramento late last week.
The Family Disaster Relief Fund was established by the Coast Guard in 2008 following a helicopter accident off the coast of Hawaii. The Coast Guard has since re-activated the fund to solicit monetary donations for the families of those aboard a C-130 Coast Guard plane based out of McClellan Airfield in Sacramento that collided mid-air with a Naval helicopter off the coast of San Clemente Island in Southern California.
Seven crew aboard the C-130 plane and two crew members aboard the Naval helicopter are believed to have perished.
"This incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers these heroes face every day, and why the Foundation is dedicated to serve and support them and their families," Coast Guard Foundation president Anne Brengle said in a statement released to the media.
Along with assisting the families of thsoe lost, the Coast Guard Foundation is workng with the US Coast Guard plan a memorial this Friday at the Coast Guard Air Station at McClellan Airfield in Sacramento.
