Sacramento, CA—
A story about inconvenience at the gas pump. The State of California wants to do away with the clips that let you fill up your car without holding the nozzle. The recommendation is going out to gas stations after there have been 10 fuel spills statewide link to the clips. So California, is it time to get a grip?
"Pft. Why?" asked driver Jason Mckenzie.
"Annoying. I don't like touching it because it's dirty," said driver Dany Chuong.
But pumps have kept the gas flowing in those ten cases, even after they were supposed to have switched off. The problem may actually be in the sensor that tell the pump it's time to shut off after your tank is full. Still, without the clip, the problem would be reduced.
"Right now it's a recommendation, not a requirement," said Dimitri Stanich with the State's Air Resources Board.
But you won't find many people willing to let go of the clip in favor of the grip.
"They actually work. I go in the store I may be late for work. Not that I'm always late for work," said Mckenzie. "But you know what I mean: it's fast."
In fact, while working on this story, we only met one person who prefers the grip to the clip. Her name is Melanie Boyd.
"I just never thought about it," she laughed.
