Firefighters were called to a grass fire near Thunder Valley in Placer County Friday afternoon.

The fire started just after 4 p.m. in the area of Fiddyment Road and Athens Avenue, about five miles north of Roseville and two miles west of Thunder Valley Casino.

The fire is about 50 acres big, but started a hay barn and dozens of bales on fire. About 100 firefighters had to be called out to help put out the blaze from Placer County, Roseville and Rocklin agencies.

CalFire said this grass fire is typical and is under control. There were no serious road closures because of this fire, but many likely saw smoke in the area.

The Casino and homes in the area were not threatened.

CalFire spokesman Daniel Berlant says despite Tuesday’s rains, the hot weather allowed the grasses to dry out again and become fuel for the fire.
